King of the Road

Added on by Mark Zemel.

The biggest reason why I've been unable to do any new projects recently is that I've been deep in an edit-hole at Viceland. For the last 8 months I've been working on several of their new TV shows. I cut the Bears episode of Balls Deep. Then I jumped onto a new series which has yet to be released called King of the Road. It's a really fun project and I'm really looking forward to it's launch (April 28th, btw). I locked one episode on Monday, and another will be done by Friday... Wish me luck!

To give you a sense of what it's like here is the official trailer for the series. It's really worth a watch.

National Geographic Posts The Collector

Added on by Mark Zemel.

In other excellent news, National Geographic posted The Collector to their Short Films Showcase. They've now posted two of my videos. It's a huge platform and it's so exciting/surreal knowing that my work will be in front of millions of eyes. It's making me antsy to get started on some new projects.

The Collector Finds New Life

Added on by Mark Zemel.

I got an email from a friend the other day pointing me to a Facebook link in which someone had posted a ripped copy of The Collector. I was annoyed at first, but then I realized that it had been viewed over 200,000 times and had 300 comments. AND the comments were great. People were so thrilled to find out about Eric's collection, about his plans for the museum and about his message. I felt like the video had finally found its intended audience. I think the view count is now over 230,000... which is bananas. Anyway, kudos to the guy who did it, Heru G. Duenas. Thanks for posting! Check out his FB page for a lot of interesting content. Link below.

The Atlantic

Added on by Mark Zemel.

The Atlantic posted The Collector! Link here. I'm really excited to have it on their site. I've got a few more Collector episodes currently in the works. They're going to be really interesting. I'll continue making them on my own, but I'd love to find a good media platform to partner with to help defray some of the costs. If anyone is interested, let me know!

The New York Times

Added on by Mark Zemel.

I just finished editing 6 episodes of Melissa Clark's cooking show for the NY Times. They've begun rolling them out, which is exciting. Learn how to cook Blue Fish and Fried + Grilled Chicken from Melissa!

NBC Nightly News

Added on by Mark Zemel.

NBC Nightly News just put out a story on Eric. They found out about him through my video and wanted to do a story on his collection and the museum. They even called the segment 'The Collector'. I went to the first shoot at his apartment. It was pretty cool watching Rehema Ellis interview him.

The Collector & The CMAA

Added on by Mark Zemel.

I made a video about African Art Collector, Eric Edwards. He's got an amazing collection of art, LPs, electronics, autographs-- you name it he collects it. The video premiered on Gothamist and got staff picked on Vimeo. The response from people was pretty great, so I helped him launch a Kickstarter campaign. Donate if you can.

Sunday School For Degenerates at Electric Zoo

Added on by Mark Zemel.

I shot and cut this mini doc for Beatport about the vinyl only tent at Electric Zoo. It featured Frank & Tony as the main DJs we were following, though we also spoke to Danny Tenaglia, Josh Wink and Kidnap Kid. The funny thing is I had no idea that it ever went up, but it turns out it did back in September of last year. So, here it is-- enjoy!

Ars Technica GE Video

Added on by Mark Zemel.

This video aired on Ars Technica. It's a little dry, but super interesting. GE is doing some incredible the-future-is-happening-right-now kinds of things. It was a pleasure working with Hilary and Marshall over at Sanborn. Edited.

VICE Colombia - PACIFISTA!

Added on by Mark Zemel.

Jorge brought me down to Colombia to DP a new series he's directing for VICE Colombia called Pacifista. It's a great series; the idea is to profile stories of peaceful resistance to the protracted violence that plagued (and to a degree still plagues) Colombia. I shot four episodes with him. We went all over the country, to some really remote villages and spoke to some really courageous people about their stories. One of the best shooting experiences I've had. The first episode I shot that they've released is about a guy named Alirio Gonzalez who started an AudioVisual school to teach kids how to use cameras and editing programs to tell their stories. It's below, chk it out!

Zola Jesus Music Video

Added on by Mark Zemel.

It's been awhile since I last updated this page. I gotta get better about that! So, in that spirit, here's a music video I directed for Zola Jesus. We recorded her live show with live audio courtesy of Jeff Curtin. Nika was great to work with and her label was really easy going and helpful. It was fun to shoot in Webster Hall again!

Wiz Khalifa & Real Estate

Added on by Mark Zemel.

This went up last week over at Pitchfork. I edited, arted and animated this Wiz Khalifa Over/Under.

I also edited this branded interview of Real Estate for Pitchfork. Was nice to get back in there and see everyone for a few days.

'Fly First' my Flying Lotus doc that got pulled because Japan

Added on by Mark Zemel.

Flying Lotus came out with Cosmogramma in 2012, a weird interesting album that got a lot of love over at P4k. So, I got to do a doc on him as he made his way from Louisville to Chicago for the Pitchfork Festival. Anyway, after it came out he had us take it down because he was having a hard time getting a visa to go to Japan because of the drug usage in the video. I was bummed, but that's how it goes sometimes. Luckily some website called en.musicplayon.com that I've never heard of ripped it and still has it up online. I can't embed it for some reason, so go to that link to check it out. It's scrappy and weird, but fun. Glad it's still out there. Click on the image to watch.

NY Daily News Article

Added on by Mark Zemel.

I was in Purchase, NY last month to edit a bunch of videos for Carnegie Hall's National Youth Orchestra. The kids came up with the concepts and our team helped bring their ideas to life. It was a lot of fun. The Daily News picked up on it and wrote an article. They even made a gif. Prettay prettay good!
