Skeleton Head - Beaten Bloody & Bruised

Added on by Mark Zemel.

The music video for Beaten Bloody and Bruised by Skeleton Head is done. Directed by Tyler Jensen, DP'd by me. This was a fun ridiculous project. But that's always what it's like working with Tyler. Good times, no budget whatsoever, lots of fake blood and cheap practical efx. Hope you like!

The Holographer

Added on by Mark Zemel.

The New Yorker just posted a video I made about holographer Jason Sapan. His business, Holographic Studios, is the last remaining gallery/studio of it's kind in NYC. Jason is a fascinating guy. What I learned about holography was actually kind of stunning. I had no idea how powerful the resolution of holographic photography is. There is no focus involved. The laser acts like wet clay, and when it impacts on an object it takes an impression of the object, like a bas relief, and leaves a three dimensional image in the film (which to a light wave is a very thick sheet).

Well, watch the video, Jason does a far better job of explaining the process than I do. Also, holograms! Eat your heart out Jem!

A$AP Rocky Selector

Added on by Mark Zemel.

Eavvon made a good call with this shoot. A$AP was only just beginning to make noise, so the timing of this video was perfect. To date it's Pitchfork TV's most viewed piece of original content. The freestyle is doooope!

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks on a roof

Added on by Mark Zemel.

I think this might've been the last DLD we did before retiring the series. I remember a few things about this shoot that make it stand out. For one thing, Hurricane Irene was supposed to hit NYC the next day. That never happened. The other really standout memory was bringing my brother Simon along. It was his birthday and Pavement is probably his favorite band (or at least a top 3). I'll never forget watching him trade baby pics with Stephen Malkmus...

J Mascis

Added on by Mark Zemel.

I made this viddy at 3egg studios. J walked in and was pretty shy. Will, in classic Will style, freaked him out by asking him about the tuner on his phone. I love this session, especially the Edie Brickell cover.

Jim Jones / Girl Talk Selector

Added on by Mark Zemel.

This Selector was crazy. We were hanging out with Girl Talk at Jim's studio for, like, an hour and a half waiting for Jim to get back from the Knicks game. Members of his entourage were passing out on the couches. Real sleepy stuff. But when Jim showed up at last, he brought the party along with him. Literally. He showed up with about 25 people in tow. Everyone crammed into the control room, and we started shooting... The beat was great, Jim was feeling it, and the result was this was the first Selector Freestyle that actually became a song. Featured Lloyd on the hook and was played on Hot 97!!

Freeway Selector

Added on by Mark Zemel.

This was the second Selector we ever did. It was a memorable one for me. We drove him around Manhattan while he freestyled his head off. You can see my head occasionally pop up from my hiding spot in the trunk. Definitely one of the more uncomfortable shoots I've been on. Also, Laura crocheted that beard for Eavvon, since, y'know, puberty!

Flying Lotus & Thundercat Over/Under

Added on by Mark Zemel.

This was one of the only Over/Under that I did not edit. But I did shoot it and make all the drawings for it. My first time meeting FlyLo. He's a hilarious dude, and Thundercat's got jokes too! One of the best Over/Unders I'd say.

El Guincho - Bombay

Added on by Mark Zemel.

This is the very first thing I edited for Pitchfork back in 2009... Night editing with Will! It's kind of crazy to think about how much things have changed at the 'fork since then. Shooooot!

Selector with Danny Brown & Joker

Added on by Mark Zemel.

Eavvon and I got lucky with this one. We were able to shoot in this amazing dilapidated building just south of city hall. They were just about to begin construction on it. We got it in under the wire. Definitely has one of my favorite Selector intros. Also, the freestyle is sick. First time working with Danny... that dude is hilarious.

Big Freedia +1

Added on by Mark Zemel.

This is the shoot that introduced me to the wild world of Freedia. Shit was crazy! It's what made me want to make a doc on Bounce music.  Will directed this piece, I edited.

The War On Drugs +1

Added on by Mark Zemel.

This was one of the first +1s we did. Tunnelvision had just been canceled as a show concept, and we replaced it with this series, which I ended up producing. Did a lot of +1s last year, which I'm sure you'll see in this blog... This shoot was soggy as fuck, it rained like crazy and Mike's camera almost stopped working while he was shooting b-roll. Good times.

Shabazz Palaces P4k Music Festival 2011

Added on by Mark Zemel.

I'm only going to post one of these interviews from 2011. Suffice to say I was super geeked to meet Ishmael. Definitely used to go in on some Digable Planets as a kid. Though I have to say that, while it was cool to meet them, we spent about 12 hours a day in a hot trailer making interview after interview and barely got to see any of the festival. Not the last time that would happen either... D'oh!
